What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a whole-body integrated approach to diagnosing, treating and preventing health problems. The practice is based on the principle that a person’s physical well-being depends on muscles, ligaments, bones and connective tissues working together in harmony.

It uses manual techniques such as
joint manipulation, stretching and soft tissue release to encourage movement, relieve muscle tension and enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues.

This aims to restore your body's full function by helping its own self-healing mechanisms. Osteopaths pride themselves on their ability to listen and understand each patient to give relevant exercises and lifestyle advice. They may also advise on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent recurring symptoms.

Who is osteopathy for?

The short answer is… everyone!

Osteopathy is effective for babies, children, teens, adults, older people, manual workers, office professionals, pregnant women, children and sportspeople.

Our Osteopaths specialise in different areas of osteopathy. Look further into the different types of osteopathy at VPO to see which may work best for you.

What will happen during your VPO osteopathy appointment?

Consultation - Examination - Diagnosis - Treatment

Osteopathic treatment takes into account a patient’s lifestyle and the environmental factors that may be contributing to their symptoms. Your course of treatment starts with a 60-minute consultation, examination and diagnosis. In this session, your VPO osteopath will sit down with you to learn more about your life and medical history to better understand the issue you are having and effectively provide a diagnosis.

We know that there may be a number of contributing factors to your symptoms. We evaluate not only the area producing pain or other problems but also any associated areas that may be contributing to the issue. We may ask you to make changes to how you sit or work, simple dietary advice or suggest simple exercises if this seems appropriate.

Follow-up appointments last 40 minutes. These are designed to restore you to a sense of health and provide you with a toolbox to maintain this autonomously in the future so you don’t need to keep coming back.

For Perrin Technique, the first appointment lasts 90 minutes and follow-up appointments are 45 minutes.

Paediatric Osteopathy Hackney

This is the treatment for a wide range of conditions for patients under the age of 16. As a baby grows into an infant and then into a child, osteopathy can be a great tool in aiding the body’s structural development process. From treating symptoms for growing pains, ear and headaches, walking difficulties, asthma and much more, paediatric osteopathy can have positive effects on infants, children and teens.

Osteopathy for children emphasises a gentle, non-invasive and holistic approach, tailored to the unique needs of your child. We consider the interconnectedness of the body, recognising that structural imbalances may impact various aspects of a child's health. Our osteopaths may address not only musculoskeletal aspects but also other factors that contribute to a child's well-being, such as nutrition, sleep, and overall lifestyle. We offer a general check-up for mums and babies from 4–6 weeks after birth. If your baby is suffering from excess crying, trapped wind, poor sleep or feeding problems they might benefit from very gentle, hands-on post-natal treatment.

After six weeks, mums will still be feeling the physical effects of pregnancy and childbirth, and they might also be experiencing new aches and pains in caring for their newborn. When necessary, our osteopaths can provide reassurance, gentle treatment and exercises to help your body recover.

Sporting injuries can happen to anyone, not just high-level athletes. The body sometimes needs a helping hand to heal properly and avoid further injury. Osteopaths are highly skilled at treating soft tissue injuries such as muscle tears or strains, ligament tears or sprains and tendonitis amongst others. They can treat musculoskeletal injuries such as fractures, dislocations and other problems affecting the bones and joints.

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy

A subtle and refined approach that focuses on the head to gently feel changes of tension and tissue quality. Your osteopath will work to activate the body’s natural ability to heal itself, and through gentle and specific support will work to bring the tissues into a state of balance and release, to restore the body to health. The treatment is very gentle, the osteopath is listening to the body and reading subtle signals to understand what trauma the body has suffered, how it is dealing with the aftermath and how this might all be contributing to the symptoms the patient has communciated

Cranial osteopathy is not so much a type of technique but an approach to reading and understanding the body and it can be used on every patient. Cranial osteopathy is widely known for the treatment of babies but is equally effective for children, adults and the over 65s.

Dry Needling

The ultimate aim of dry needling is to reduce muscle pain and spasm, increase range of joint mobility and increase the overall function of the body.

Your osteopath will use fine needles (the same as those used in acupuncture) to activate and encourage tight spots (trigger points) in the muscle to loosen. As well as decreasing tension, it can also improve blood circulation, nerve conduction and tendon and ligament strength.
