What is Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the womb — often around the pelvis, bladder, bowel, ovaries, or abdominal cavity. It can cause inflammation, scar tissue, pain, and postural changes.

While osteopathy does not treat the endometrial tissue itself, it can help manage associated musculoskeletal pain and mobility issues.

Symptoms & What You May Experience

Symptoms vary but may include:

  • Pelvic, abdominal, or lower back pain
  • Pain during menstruation, sex, or bowel/bladder movements
  • Hip, pelvic floor, or sacroiliac joint discomfort
  • Bloating or abdominal tension
  • Fatigue and altered posture due to pain
  • Referral into thighs or lower back

Symptoms often worsen around menstruation but can persist outside of it.

What causes Endometriosis?

The exact cause is unclear, but contributing factors include:

  • Hormonal influences
  • Immune and inflammatory responses
  • Scar tissue or adhesions
  • Pelvic or abdominal surgery
  • Genetic predisposition

How We Help (At Victoria Park Osteopaths)

Osteopathy supports quality of life by easing musculoskeletal strain associated with endometriosis:

  • Gentle manual therapy to relieve tension in the lower back, hips, abdomen, and pelvis
  • Mobilisation of the sacroiliac joints and spine
  • Myofascial and visceral techniques to improve mobility and relieve guarding
  • Pelvic floor awareness and relaxation techniques
  • Advice on posture, breathing, and pain management
  • Support alongside gynaecological or medical care

Recovery Time & What to Expect

  • Symptom relief may be felt after a few sessions
  • Ongoing treatment can help manage flare-ups and posture-related pain
  • Improvements are often cumulative with self-care and strengthening

When to Seek Medical Review / Red Flags

  • Severe or worsening pelvic pain
  • Unexplained bleeding
  • Bowel/bladder issues
  • Pain unresponsive to conservative management

We often collaborate with GPs, gynaecologists, or pelvic health specialists.
